  • CAN I RENT THE STORAGE LOCKER I PURCHASED TO BY TIME TO GET IT EMPTY?
IF I WAS TO GET INTO THIS BUSINESS IT WOULD BE PART TIME, LIKE A HOBBY.
I AM SURE THERE ARE SOME AUCTIONS ON THE WEEKEND. I WOULD START OUT GETTING ONE UNIT A MONTH.
    THANKS

    • Mike,

Sure, you can rent the unit to buy yourself some more time. Since most storage facilities require you to remove the contents of the unit within 48 hours, renting the unit will allow you to take your time piecing things out. Some storage facilities even give you your first months rent for free. Sometimes, the unit you buy will contain large pieces of furniture or appliances that can be difficult to move. Once you rent the unit, you can place an ad on Craigslist and then have your buyers meet you at the storage unit. This way, you won’t have move the heavy stuff. Here is a great example:

I was at a U-Haul auction about 18 months ago and one of the units contained about 3,000 books. I had garage sales every Saturday and I knew that even if I had to piece them out for $1 each, I would make a great profit. I won the unit for $130. I could hear people laughing at me in the background because they thought I was crazy for buying that many books. “Books don’t sell,” they said.

When we went to the next unit, guess what was inside? Yes, more books. There was about 7,000 in this unit. I won the unit for $150. After examining the contents, it turned out that I had purchased the contents of an entire high school library. I had my crew load up about 90 boxes of books into the truck and we took them to our garage sale. Removing those boxes barely put a dent in the amount of boxes that needed to be moved, so I decided to rent both units. Luckily, I rented trucks from that particular U-Haul every week. Since the manager knew me really well and since you get a month of storage free with a truck rental, I ended up renting both units and it didn’t cost me a dime.

If anyone ever tells you that books don’t sell, you tell them they’re crazy. Books do sell, especially if you’re reselling your merchandise at a flea market or having a garage sale. I ended up finding a buyer that wanted all of the books and who had the man power to move them all. The buyer was a church pastor who wanted to send the books to Uganda. I sold the contents to him for pennies on the dollar and I still made $1500 profit. Plus, I probably sold about a thousand books over the first 3 weeks at my garage sales. And the best part, I had someone else do a majority of the moving.

  • Wow that was interesting. It seems like I could make some extra cash part time
without spending so much money. I live in the Houston area, are there many auctions
that occur on the weekends? What is a good amount of cash to bring for a beginner?
Would it be wise to attend a auction just to see how things work before bidding?
    Thanks

    • Yes, there are auctions on the weekends, although a majority of the auctions occur during the week. On average, in the Houston area, there are 2-7 auctions every Saturday. Sunday auctions are quite rare.

I usually tell people to bring as much cash as they can. If you have a large amount of cash, bring it. You never know when a great unit will come along, and when it does, you don’t want to lose it because you didn’t have enough cash with you.

Sure, attending a auction just to watch is a great way to learn how things work. Don’t be in any rush to buy a unit, there are plenty to go around. Be patient and wait for the right unit to come along at the right price. That’s how you make money in this business.

  • I just started buying and I found out it is not hard to sell the things you have. The little unwanted things are not bad. I have a store and I have auction at the end of the month.
